People First Programme

Background

PIP has been operating since 1994 under a holistic, inclusive approach that invites the involvement of as many people in the community as possible. While one-to-one education has always been the cornerstone of PIP, services have since grown to include:

  • The Meeting Place: a social club for people aged 18-28 years, offering friendship and support around relationships

  • Basic Essentials: a professional development workshop for teachers, health workers and other professionals focusing on how to teach young people protective education skills

  • Parent Consultations and Support: short sessions where parents can obtain knowledge and skills to effectively and comfortably address issues with their child

  • Kids Stuff: tailored programmes for primary school students focusing on keeping safe

  • Be Cool, Be Safe: tailored programmes for secondary students around the areas of protective education and human relationships.

PIP actively promotes the right of people with disabilities to access effective sexuality education programs, resources, information and clinical services that meet their sexual and reproductive health needs. Parents, service providers and others in the community are encouraged to become contributing partners in the educational process.

PIP believes this will enhance the lives of people with a disability by promoting healthy and safe relationships, and decreasing vulnerability to sexual abuse and exploitation.

PIP supports and adopts the Disability Services Standards, and works to ensure that all our services are developed and managed accordingly.

In 1999 the PIP won the Heads of Government Australian Violence Prevention Award, receiving acknowledgement for a unique and outstanding community contribution.
